Today was quite a surprising day for me, which put me into thinking about the mental condition of the students at this present time. Earlier in the morning, I saw a teenage boy sitting outside my chamber with his mother. After speaking to him, I found that he is a college student. He is depressed, passing sleepless nights, cutting classes, etc.
Later that morning, a child walked into my chamber. He was cute, but unfortunately did not have a smile on his face. His mother was anxious and reported that he keeps lying continuously, often gets aggressive and breaks things, has a bad temper, etc. After a good amount of conversation with both the mothers, I concluded that the reason is ‘STRESS’.
I was quite surprised to find that, we are living in a time where stress is the constant companion of students, be it at any academic level. The National College Health Assessment, 2016 showed that more than 65% of students reported that they are suffering from stress which is 7% more than what was in 2013.
The rate is quite alarming and it is high time to curb the stress level. As the first step to help students, I am asking teachers to take a step forward and look into the matter.
Smart ways for teachers to reduce the stress in students:
Teach your students time management-
On the first day of the semester or academic year, explain your students that they will be stressed because of the study pressure and the numerous assignments that they have to write. Along with this, explain to them that the only way to manage stress is to learn how to manage time, which starts with being organized and following a routine every day.
Keep a window open for submission dates-
When you ask your students to write assignments, keep a window open for the submission dates. Tell them that they have got time till the next week or from one date to another date. Correct mistakes in a positive way-
Making mistakes is also a way to learn. Therefore, when your students make a mistake, do not scold them. Instead, correct them in a positive way. Let your students learn the correct way to solve a sum or write an answer through that mistake. Never disgrace a student in front of the class. I would say, never disgrace them at all.
